Museums, Restaurants, & Places to see with your family IN Fort Wayne, Indiana
About This Road Trip
Fun for Families
Fort Wayne’s newest attraction is Promenade Park, located where the city’s three rivers converge for entertainment, exploration and fun. There’s a tree-top canopy trail, riverboat cruises, outdoor concerts, kayak rentals and more. Spark your imagination at Science Central, where a 6’ diameter sphere appears to be floating in mid-air showing Earth in its actual colors. At the flip of a button, you can see all the current storm systems or turn it into another planet. Developed by the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration, it’s the first in Indiana and one of about 100 in the world. You can also explore magnets, sound, light, optical illusions and more. TripAdvisor ranked Fort Wayne Children’s Zoo 7th best in the U.S. and 20th best in the world! You’ll see why when you check out the sea lions, sharks, tigers, lemurs, and capuchin monkeys, to name a few. Feed the giraffes, touch the stingrays, ride a pony and enjoy a few rides.
Exploring Museums and Gardens
Whether you’re into fine and decorative art, gardening or cars, a Fort Wayne trip fits the bill. The Fort Wayne Museum of Art showcases the cross-cultural connections between artwork and artists from diverse backgrounds. The gallery shop has original works from 75 regional and national artists, and there’s an outdoor sculpture walk. Explore three indoor and four outdoor gardens at Foellinger-Freimann Botanical Conservatory, ranging from a tropical oasis to a desert setting. At the Auburn Cord Duesenberg Automobile Museum, nine galleries include classic cars, Indiana-built cars and racing cars. Car buffs love seeing the original Auburn Automobile Company showroom and offices.
With a nod to history, you'll love the walkability of the pedestrian plaza, fun social events and remarkable architecture at The Landing, where Fort Wayne began. Check out Hyde Brothers Booksellers, where you’re sure to leave with something odd and obscure after scouring two floors stacked with over 150,000 titles. And if you’ve been thinking about taking up a new hobby, visit Sweetwater — the music store with the largest on-site inventory in the country. They have everything from guitars and drums to the gear and accessories to make sure everyone can hear you play.
Food is Fun, Too
Satisfy all your “tooths” in Fort Wayne: from sweet to fancy. How? Well, Hoppy Gnome focuses on using fresh ingredients in their scratch kitchen as they create specialty tacos and other popular dishes. There’s farm-to-table deliciousness awaiting you at Tolon, where they’re playfully sophisticated to match whatever mood you’re in. Fort Wayne’s Famous Coney Island Wiener Stand was started by Macedonain immigrants over 100 years ago, making it the oldest one in America. They’re still selling about 2,000 dogs a day, smothered in over 70 pounds of onions. You’ll fondly remember this trip when you take home some DeBrand Fine Chocolates after you tour to watch their artisan chocolate-making process (and taste samples!).
